The Tasman difference begins in the process. To transform home-grown, raw materials into world-class products with the utmost care and respect the aim is to tread as lightly on the earth as possible, every step of the way. Where others have created a commodity process, Tasman Leathers of New Zealand stands uniquely as an end-to-end processor.
There is control over the entire practice—from the moment the raw hides arrive, until the premium leather is out the door and ready to be enjoyed globally. Maintaining an intimate relationship with the quality of the leather is important, and we are proud to have standards that ensure this every time.
With New Zealand’s natural resources enabling us to produce such a high-quality product, it’s only fair to show respect. In the way that leather begins as a byproduct, we aim to continue the cycle of recycling and repurposing. On average, 60-70% of the by-product created is reused in other industries—a massive reduction in the waste sent to landfill and the potential harm to the beautiful environment.
We’re mindful of waterways too; the tannery sits on the banks of the Whanganui river, so each day we are reminded of the majesty of nature and the importance of treating water with careful consideration. The use of water-based products ensures waterways are safe from harmful substances, and our continuous target to reduce water usage encourages innovative thinking. Our goal is always the same: to achieve and maintain the highest quality standards possible.
Just as our processes reflect the kind nature of our country, so do our people. A safe, supportive working environment is fundamental to success and relationships with staff are valued across the entire tanning process. Looking after our people is second nature to us.
Outside of work, we support staff and their families by sponsoring sports teams, fundraisers and activities that help build a stronger community.
